Poultry should always have access to grit and shell especially if they are confined in a run or indoors. 

Poultry grit aids their digestion because it acts as the hens 'teeth' in the crop to grind up the food. Mussel shell grit will help the hens to form good shells on their eggs and supplies them with a source of calcium.
